I took Clayton to story time at the library today. As they were passing out the snack, the little girl across the table from us asked "Does this have any fat in it?" to which I laughed out loud. It just sounded so odd to hear that phrase coming from a three year old little girl. It struck me as funny and darn cute. I attributed it to a mother who worries about her own diet, and her daughter was picking up on it. That was until I heard her say "Good, I don't have to take my enzymes." Wow! Renae is a jerk! Her mom played it off very nicely and acted like "Yes, my daughter is cute." Which she was, but man I felt like a jerk! I am so very thankful that I have healthy kids!

Oh, I'm sure they're used to it. When we were in Germany last summer a guy came up to Sarah while she was doing Madeline's chest percussions, and simply asked "Why are you klopfing on her like that?" He wasn't being rude, just very matter-of-fact and it wasn't at all offensive. It's actually sort of a relief to be able to explain yourself, because usually people just look at you oddly and you want to tell them what the heck you're doing.
That's pretty funny. Most people would probably just assume the same thing you did--why wouldn't you, if you weren't used to thinking about fat and enzymes in that context? I agree with Dave, I would much rather have someone ask than just stare. And good for that little girl for thinking about fat and enzymes! I've been impressed by how aware Madeline already is about what she needs to do in regards to enzymes.
A great conversation could have ensued. HOwever, DAve and Sarah just have Mads take enzymes before everything but water so there is never a problem.
P.S. When I read this post, my first thought was not, "Renae is a jerk." It was, "Wow, they serve snacks at storytime??"
I think it is awesome you are taking Clayton to storytime! I would have laughed too to hear a 3 year old say that ;)
I thought the same as Sarah. What a place. Books and food? What a way to go!
